the Unruly conflict project
essential question
How can we as artists best represent the complex time of the 1920’s and combine the issues / events through the use of Dadaism and mixed media?

STEP ONE - FINDING SOURCE IMAGES
TO CREATE YOUR DADA INSPIRED ARTWORK YOU MUST FIRST START WITH SOURCE IMAGES. REMEMBER THAT THE DADA MOVEMENT USED A VARIETY OF MATERIALS (FOUND AND TRADITIONAL ) TO CREATE WORK. THE WORKS SMASH TOGETHER IMAGES THAT REALLY DON'T MAKE SENSE BEING TOGETHER BUT THAT IS THE POINT. YOU NEED TO REPRESENT THE CRAZINESS OF THE 1920'S. BELOW I HAVE COLLECTED FILM STILLS FROM THE GALLIPOLI MOVIE, PHOTOS FROM THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES, IMAGES OF FLAPPERS (YOU COULD ALSO USE FILM STILLS FROM THE MOVIE CABARET) AND ANYTHING RELATED TO ART DECO WHICH ORIGINATED IN THE 1920'S. THE MORE SOURCES IMAGES YOU HAVE THE BETTER AND REMEMBER TO GET IMAGES THAT ARE AS BIG AS POSSIBLE FROM THE INTERNET BECAUSE AS SOON AS YOU ENLARGE THEM THEY WILL PIXELATE. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY RESEARCHING.

STEP TWO -
CREATE A COMPOSITION PLAN IN PHOTOSHOP
plan one
USING YOUR SOURCE IMAGES AND PHOTOSHOP PLAY AROUND WITH YOUR IMAGES TO CREATE THE BEST COMPOSITION YOU CAN. BELOW IN PLAN 1 I HAVE USED JUST 3 IMAGES. THE FOCAL POINT IS A CLOSE UP FROM THE GALLIPOLI MOVIE, AND IN THE BACK GROUND IS AN IMAGE FROM THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES AND THE OTHER FROM THE MOVIE CABARET (FLAPPERS). I TRIED TO VISUALLY BALANCE THE WORK WITH THE FOCAL POINT IN THE CENTRE. BOTH THE IMAGES EACH SIDE ARE BLACK AND WHITE TO CREATE GOOD CONTRAST.
PLAN two
PLAN 2 USES MUCH MORE IMAGERY AND COLOUR
STEP THREE - TRACE OUT LINES
USING A VERY SHARP PENCIL AND PAPER USE THE LIGHT TABLE TO TRACE OUT ALL THE LINES AND DETAIL YOU CAN SEE. TAKE TIME AND EFFORT TO DO THIS. MAKE SURE THIS IS DONE TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY. THIS WILL BE PROJECTED ONTO YOUR MDF BOARD READY FOR PAINTING. YOU WILL NEED TO CONCENTRATE!!
PLAN THAT HAS BEEN SCANNED READY TO BE PROJECTED ONTO THE BOARD (EVERYONES MUST LOOK SIMILAR TO THIS). MAKE SURE THE LINES ARE DARK BEFORE SCANNING SO YOU DON'T LOSE DETAIL IN THE PROCESS. IF YOU MISS THIS STEP IT WILL BE HARD TO SEE WHEN YOU PROJECT IT AND TRY TO DRAW IT OUT (SEE STUDENTS WORK BELOW).
STEP FOUR - TRANSFER ONTO MDF BOARD
ONCE YOU HAVE SCANNED THE WORK, NOW USE YOUR MACBOOK AND WHITE BOARD PROJECTOR TO TRANSFER YOUR DESIGN ONTO THE BOARD.....THIS IS NOT EASY.....THE DETAIL CAN BE BLURRY!!! TAKE YOUR TIME AND DO YOUR BEST. YOU DO NEED TO COMPLETE THIS IN ONE GO OTHERWISE IT IS TOO DIFFICULT TO LINE IT UP AGAIN. IF THERE ARE PARTS JUST TO HARD TO SEE AND DO YOU CAN FREE HAND DRAW THEM OR USE THE CHARCOAL TRANSFER TECHNIQUE.
STEP FIVE - Colour USING MIXED MEDIA AND VARIOUS TECHNIQUES
(PAINT, DRAW, COLLAGE, PASTE UP'S, SPRAY CAN STENCILS
THIS IS THE REAL TIME CONSUMING STEP.....PAINTING, DRAWING, COLLAGE, PASTE UPS, STENCILS WHAT EVER YOU WANT. THIS IS WHERE YOU GET TO LEARN ABOUT AND DO WHATEVER TECHNIQUE YOU WANT. IT JUST TAKES A LONG TIME TO DO.
step SIX - finish piece
FINISH YOUR PIECE BY LOOKING AT IT CRITICALLY, THOSE FINAL FEW TOUCHES CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. VARNISH YOUR WORK TO PROTECT IT AND MAKE IT POP. BELOW ARE EXAMPLES OF OTHER STUDENTS FINAL WORKS.
