the 'could we should we' project

ARTICLE - US Supreme Court rules human genes cannot be patented
WHAT IF IT GOES WRONG?

essential question?

We as artists must challenge peoples thinking, in this project we are highlighting the ethics in science. Should we as citizens allow scientists to use genetic modification on human beings and as artists how can we bring this issue to peoples attention through artworks?
Project Overview

Reason for making the Human GMO?

  • HUMAN + CHEETAH = SPEED
  • HUMAN + DOG = SMELL
  • HUMAN + BIRD = FLY
  • HUMAN + BIRD = FEATHERS INSTEAD OF HAIR
  • HUMAN + TURTLE = LONG LIFE SPAN
  • HUMAN + BAT = NIGHT VISION
  • HUMAN + GIRAFFE = TALL

STEP ONE - IDEA GENERATION

  • TASK A: IN A GROUP OF 3-4 PEOPLE YOU HAVE 20 MINUTES TO CREATE A MIND MAP OF ALL THE ANIMALS THAT YOU CAN POSSIBLY THINK OF.
  • TASK B: NEXT TO EACH ANIMAL WRITE THE MOST OBVIOUS CHARACTERISTICS OF THAT ANIMAL FOR EXAMPLE CHEETAH - SPEED -SPOTS (SEE ABOVE FOR OTHER EXAMPLES).

STEP TWO - COLLECT SOURCE IMAGES

CHOOSE 1 or 2 ANIMALS THAT COULD BE THE FOUNDATION FOR YOUR HUMAN GMO CERAMIC BUST AND COLLECT AS MANY SOURCE IMAGES AS YOU CAN THAT CAN HELP YOU DEVELOP YOUR IDEA.

STEP THREE - CONCEPTUAL DRAWINGS

OPTION 1 : THE 50/50 HEAD

  • You can divide your bust down the middle making one side the perfect human and the other side what went wrong.
Picture

OPTION 2 : THE MUTANT HEAD

  • You can mix an animal and human features together to get a GMO human full bust gone wrong.

ARTICLES / NEWS CLIPS (STUDENT EXAMPLES)

THE FOLLOWING WORK WAS CREATED IN SCIENCE WITH MS. SOLTYSIAK SHOWING THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF GMO'S BUT ALSO QUESTIONING THE ETHICS OF IT. IT'S VERY INTERESTING.
