from monogram design to stencil art

essential question:
How can you represent your identity using monogram design and morph it into a street art stencil?

Design Brief:

You are required to design a Monogram using your own initials. Your Monogram requirements include:
  • Suitable for reproduction in black and white and colour.
  • Suitable for printing using a stencil
You must consider aspects of your individuality and personality to incorporate into you Monogram where possible. You are restricted to One week designing and One week creating.

Research

Collate a range of monogram designs used by individual people and companies. Choose successful and unsuccessful designs and critique them asking yourself questions such as:
  • What do like or dislike as design?
  • What is visually interesting?
  • What captures your attention?
  • What elements of art and principles of design are successfully used?

ideation (idea generation)

1. Create a mind dump (brainstorm, mind map, list) about yourself, considering character strengths, individuality and personality.
2. Create a range of thumbnail preliminary sketches of your monogram. Experiment and explore with both upper and lower case fonts. Start this process with line drawings, then develop bold or block lettering.

Class critique with warm and cool comments will help you develop a successful design.

refinement

1. Choose your best idea and design it in greater detail using black and white only. You can now use online software to create.
2. Explore a range of ways to use contrast and positive and negative space in your design.
3. After your black and white monogram is successfully completed redesign to add colour.
4. Create and test several different colour variations, and consider how they  might reflect your individuality/personality.
5. Print out and modify your design so that it can be cut out as a stencil (you will need to add bridges to hold it all in place and cut out).
6. Document this process by taking photos and create a digital folio using Google Sites and clearly explain your decisions and problem solving with annotated comments.
