my year as head of school in england
For the 2016/17 academic school year in England I was employed as the Head of Perryfield (year 7 & 8) and Interim Head of Specialist Provision (Special Educational Needs) at IPACA. As of September 2017 IPACA became Atlantic Academy Portland under a new sponsor. These were exciting times and I wish nothing but continued improvement and success for the new Academy. Portland deserves to have a thriving school, supported by all, that will continue to focus on the success of their incredible children.
IPACA was located on Portland in Dorset, England. IPACA opened with a new campus for the 2016/17 school year. IPACA had a schools within schools, all through academy approach with a digitally rich ethos. Unfortunately IPACA was placed in special measures early on in the academic year due to historically poor results, was dropped by the sponsor and then Principal left. Since that time Acting Principal Gary Spracklen and the senior leadership team, staff and students worked extremely hard to build IPACA back up. I am proud to write I believe we have achieved this with KS1 and KS2 results showing significant improvement. Therefore it has been a challenge for me to never truly understand why support and success was over shadowed by negativity from a loud minority. There is still much to do however I am confident with the committed staff and amazing students they will continue to impress and improve.
Since beginning at IPACA my role changed quickly from being the expert in Project Based Learning and the Head of Admiralty school to leading on effective Teaching and Learning practices, behaviour for learning and all special educational needs as the Interim Head of Specialist Provision while continuing on as Head of Perryfield school (year 7 & 8). It has been the biggest challenge of my career by far but much that I am proud of including....
